Itinerary:
Sunday: We recommend you arrive Saturday or
no later than Sunday afternoon. Your guides
will pick you
up for an early dinner and
clothing check. If your guide determines
that you are missing essential gear, or
that your gear is inadequate we
will take you shopping to pick up what you
need.
Monday: We pick you up at 7:00 a.m. and
provide a continental breakfast during our
drive. From Anchorage
we drive along the scenic
Turnagain coastal highway and through a mile
long mountain tunnel to the port
town of Whittier. This drive
alone is a tour, but for you, it is just the
beginning of a huge day of travel and
visual experiences.
In Whittier we meet our water tax and begin
a three hour tour of Prince William Sound
(PWS). During our
trip we will pass several
tidewater glaciers, and we will keep an eye
out for whales and the other sea
mammals that call PWS home.
Upon arrival at Port Ashton Lodge, you will
be shown to your room and have time to
stretch your legs and
explore the surroundings. After
lunch we meet on the beach and take a
warm-up paddle in the bay. During
the week we paddle in some
exposed locations: it is important that
everyone know how to perform a deep
water rescue. During this first
afternoon everyone will have an opportunity
to practice this rescue.
In the evening you may explore
the bay by foot, soak in the wood fired hot
tub, watch the bears, or go
fishing. Fishing licenses and
tackle are available for rent from Port
Ashton Lodge.
Tuesday: After an Alaskan breakfast we
paddle over to the native village of
Chenega. We take a walking
tour of the village including
the museum and the Russian Orthodox church.
We continue on to explore the
Northeastern shoreline of Saw
Mill Bay.
Wednesday: Today we use Port Ashton’s boat
to ferry us across to LaTouche Island. We
spend the morning
exploring Horseshoe Bay then
paddle the six miles back to Port Ashton.
Thursday: This is a big day: out to the sea
lion haul out. Port Ashton’s boat will ferry
us out to the end of
Elrington passage to experience
the big swells of the open ocean and paddle
with the sea lions. Along with
sea lions we may see otters,
orca whales, and several species of sea
birds. This is a long day, we have
twelve miles to travel before
reaching home. But when we reach home, there
will be a fresh sea food
dinner, and that wonderful hot
tub.
Friday: In the morning we hike up and over
the mountains behind the lodge to hidden
lake. We have
spectacular views of Sawmill
bay and we visit a frequently used bear den.
In the afternoon you have your
choice to relax at the lodge or
paddle over to the fish hatchery and the
abandon sawmill.
Saturday: We saved the best experience as
your last adventure. In route home to
Whittier, we stop in Icy
Bay and venture among the ice
bergs in our kayaks. This bay is named Icy
Bay for a reason, two huge
glaciers calf into this bay
making for an abundance of floating ice. We
will launch from our water taxi and
spend time exploring,
listening, and watching this spectacular two
mile wide glacier as it snakes it way into
the ocean. Upon arriving in
Anchorage we will drop you at your hotel.
You Supply:

Sunday night in Anchorage
before leaving and Saturday upon returning
from Port Ashton.
Meals:
Before Sunday dinner and after
Saturday Lunch
Clothing:
Appropriate clothing for on the
water, and in camp see recommend clothing
list below
Dry suit: This
trip is remote and the weather changes, you
must have a drysuit for your protection. We
may
need them, we may not, but if
we do, you will be very glad you have one.
You can rent from us.
Paddle Top:
This is not required, but we are on the
water four to six hours per day. A good
paddle top is
superior to a rain coat. If you
do not have one, it is worth it to rent one
from us.
Duffle Bag or Dry Bag:
Clothing and gear that goes out
to Port Ashton needs to be stored in a
duffle or dry bag and not a suitcase.
All the gear you are taking
with you needs to be packed in this type of
bag when we pick you up on
Monday morning.
