Itinerary:
Sunday: We recommend you arrive some time
Sunday. You are responsible for your room
and food. We
can arrange a room in
Anchorage for you or you can book your own
reservation.
Monday: We pick you up at 9:00 a.m. and
drive one hour North of Anchorage to the
Matanuska River Valley
and your lodging for the
next four nights. After you settle into your
room we enjoy a hardy lunch and
prepare for the first
adventure; Whitewater Inflatable Kayak float
trip. We drive up the river canyon to our
departure location. Your
guides will teach you how to paddle your IK
through the class II and III
whitewater. If you enjoy
river rafting, you will love inflatable
kayaks. We’ve had many client’s comment,
“…my ducky trip was so
much more fun than the raft trip I took!”.
Tuesday: Time to explore a glacier. We drive
up the river to its source; The Matanuska
Glacier. Equipped
with crampons and ski
poles we trek out onto the ice to explore
its terrain. We do not need ropes, we do
not do any vertical
climbing, but there are plenty of unique
features to explore and probe.
Wednesday: Time to climb a mountain! We have
two options for this trip. If you are in
good shape and up
for the challenge, we
will climb to the summit of a 6,200 foot
peak with spectacular views for 360 degrees.
The less physically
demand, but still quite fulfilling trip, is
to drive to around 3,000 feet and begin our
trek
to an alpine lake. We can
bask in the warm northern sun and soak our
toes, or continue higher to the 4,000
foot ridge line. We often
can see Mount Denali from this ridge even
though it is over 200 miles away.
Thursday: Time to go mountain biking! We
drive south up into the Chugach mountains to
a glacier lake.
The ride is along a
primarily flat maintenance road twelve miles
back to a public cabin and the moraine of
the receding glacier.
Friday: Time to go to the Ocean! We will be
up early today, we have a long drive South
of Anchorage to
the port town of
Whittier. The drive from Anchorage alone is
billed as a scenic gem. But your adventure
is
just beginning. After
driving through the mile long tunnel, we
emerge at the “land of waterfalls”. We
paddle across the bay to
the Kittiwake rookery. Imagine a hotel of
over 2000 birds along the cliff, and you
have the noise and
commotion of the rookery. We continue east
to the terminus of the Billings glacier and
eat lunch in the skeleton
forest. It is common for us to see sea
lions, sea otters, eagles, puffins, moose,
bears, and lots and lots
of salmon. We will stop for dinner at one of
our favorite micro breweries in
Anchorage and then bid
you fair well.
